Identifying list members that are unique to one of two lists using Microsoft Excel
This is a procedure describing how to take two lists and compare entries to identify those that are present in only one of the two lists. This procedure can be useful, for example, to compare the list of proteins in the gk_central vs. live site to find those that are unreleased.
Identifying list members that are unique
1. Create a new file that contains two columns one one column for each list you want to compare.
2. Select the cell ranges (both columns).
3. On the Data tab (in Sort and Filter group) click Advanced.
4. Under Action, select Filter the list, in place option (the list range is filled in already).
5. Click the checkbox "Unique records only" then OK.
This highlights the unique values in the dev list (as the overlapping ones will also be in the released list).
6. Highlight col A and click on Sort.
7. Choose :
Sort by "Column A"
Sort On "Cell Colour"
Order "A to Z"
8. Click OK
Column A is sorted by colour, which are the unique proteins unreleased in gk_central
